American - Mexican Tensions Arise
Mesilla Valley
Native American Attacks & Compensation
Even after the Mexican - American war, there were still many resentments between the two countries. One of these involved the Mesilla Valley. Both countries claimed that the valley was their own and cause many deputes about the rightful possession of the land.

It really was the Mexican-American war and the annexation of Texas that created these tensions.
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo states that the United States would protect Mexico from Native American attacks that commonly occurred south of New Mexico.
Still these attacks occurred and Mexico demanded money as compensation for the lack of protection. The United States denied and thus angered Mexico and increased tensions.
